The first ever experiential study on human placentophagia (placenta consumption) was published February 20th, 2013 in the Ecology, Food and Nutritional Journal. The study was completed by two University of Las Vegas researchers and co-authored by Placenta Benefits founder, Jodi Selander.
What was the overall results of the study? 96 percent of the women said they had a “positive” or “very positive” experience consuming their placenta, and 98 percent said they would do it again.
What a great step toward expanding knowledge of placenta encapsulation. Before we know it every woman will be familiar with the benefits of placenta encapsulation and will have the opportunity to experience those benefits for a healthy postpartum.
GROWING numbers of mothers are turning to a home-grown remedy to keep the baby blues at bay – pills made from their placenta.
Despite medical professionals warning the purported health benefits of the natural afterbirth snack are not medically proven, converted mothers are filling baby forums with DIY recipes. Labour coach Tammy Halliday said she had encapsulated 24 placentas in the past seven months – three times more than the previous year. She said Mad Men actor January Jones’s admission to a US magazine that she ate her placenta after the birth of her son earlier this year sparked the trend. Ms Halliday said the internal organ was more palatable after it was cleaned, steamed, dehydrated, ground and put into capsules. She said clients who took the capsules twice daily reported mood stabilisation, boosted energy and increased milk production.
I know I’m a little late getting this out there but this past March January Jones told People Magazine that she had her placenta encapsulated and recommends it to all moms. Since then there has been a lot of media of placenta encapsulation, negative and positive. Not a lot of research has been done on the direct effects of ingesting the placenta in any form including encapsulation but you can depend on the overwhelming positive testimonies of the results from thousands of women across the United States.
